I live in California and am thinking of sending my driver's license pic to remove me from the database, but the paranoid part of me kind of doesn't want them to have my ID on file! (I did try one of the copycat search engines, and it found 6-7 photos of me despite the fact that I've always tried very hard to keep pics off the internet -- never had a facebook account, don't post selfies to Instagram, etc. One was in the audience of a book signing -- the author took a pic of the crowd, and there I was.)

I used to work in tech on this kind of open source facial recognition software. Some were top secret government projects. It made me uncomfortable and I knew it was creepy for this exact reason; it was only a matter of time before it’d be used in horrifying ways. At least I could sometimes find joy doing grueling annotation work— as I helped the software gain confidence in its results, I laughed every time it thought a fire hydrant or a light pole was a face. just like the photos in r/facesinthings

I don’t want this. Exception for, if there could be a sushi recognition search engine. Just take a picture of the fish you’re eating and they will tell you if it’s gonna make you 💩your brains out. That would be useful

I am in California and just requested my file. I’m curious what happens when they find underage people and find inappropriate images. Do they contact authorities?

I thought I was going to be listening to Behind The Bastards and somehow this popped up in my feed. I didn’t realize how much I missed you PJ. I listened to this episode and then binged Crypto Island. Thanks man!
