I almost skipped this one, but I've torn through a lot of podcasts during the past few days, and needed something to play while I walked the dog this morning. I'm glad I listened. Really fascinating episode with some much needed historical perspective.
Understanding past mistakes prevents repeating them in the future. The problem is that those in a position to decide about the future always invent new ways to make the same mistakes. I have come to the conclusion that democracy is not the best way to manage the community because democracy works when its tools are used correctly. If you use ballot boxes to throw them at the crowd, you can say you are using ballot boxes, but not in the way democracy would want. Let me explain: democracy works if all the people participating respect the rules of the game, first and foremost being informed and voting for the best position. Today, those who vote don't care about the positions of the candidates, they follow their instincts, their gut, blindly and without the possibility of doubt or second thought. The toy of democracy is broken forever. Unfortunately, the new despots no longer surround themselves with artists and creatives, as they did in the Italian Renaissance, today it's all much more Lord of the Flies.
When PJ scratches at the reality of himself being the schmo… I’ve never been to the board meetings to ask about Reply All, but I’ve always wanted to share how I felt about Reply All, but when he mentions he himself as the schmo, I feel like that’s one of the first times he’s come near to it, close to talking about it all, and then later, when he’s pitching the board meeting, he jokes about asking him all sorts of questions, like if he’s still friends with people he used to work with, 😮💨 it’s just enough of him talking about Alex that it all comes racing back for me. I’m on your side PJ and Sruthi. I think I’m not alone. Sorry for being weird haha
