Dr. Shelie Miller - “Five Misconceptions Surrounding the Environmental Impacts of Single-Use Plastic”
As usual, this newsletter is here to remind people that a new episode is out and provide a place to make comments. Please be polite, both to each other and us, and try to assume good intentions.
Also, just to note a happy occasion: this is our first reported story from our show’s senior producer, Garrott Graham.
While Garrott’s voice will be familiar to Search Engine listeners, this is his first time reporting an entire story. Garrott is a force of nature behind the scenes here. His imagination, intellectual drive, and joy animate much of the show you hear from week to week. So it makes us happy to see him on the air reporting a story out. Please wish Garrott a happy first story!
Enjoy your weekend! We’ll have a new one for you next week, too.
PJ
Fist of all PJ I am a big fan and have followed your work for a long time. I wanted to like this episode, but I felt it really missed the mark and did not live up to the quality of previous episodes. My biggest complaint is that no one looked particularly good in the way the story was presented. I felt it sent some mixed messages about teenagers, sustainability, corporate marketing, and the education system overall.
Ironically, the paper cups they switched away from may have been the most sustainable choice all along.
Really appreciated the call-outs of packaging as a red herring and impacts of cows. I’ve been on the anti-beef train for a while now and it makes me happy to see that knowledge/sentiment is catching on more broadly. Now, to convince Americans to embrace the humble, beautiful bean… if you’ve never had a high-quality heirloom bean, you’re missing out! And the best beans money can buy are still cheaper than meat!
