Hello again!

Thanks to everyone who paid for a Crypto Island subscription, and thank you to everyone who shot me an email. I received some great questions about cryptocurrency this week. Some of them I was already planning to answer in future episodes, others were new to me.

A nice thing about covering crypto is that the fundamental questions are actually enjoyably complicated to answer. Is it money? What happens to people’s crypto when it gets hacked?  How do you measure the full environmental impact, and can it be mitigated?

A lot of people also just want crypto mining explained.

All of this should be coming up in the coming months.

Today though, I have a new episode for you with the entertaining and incisive Cas Piancey, a full-time crypto skeptic and co-host of the Crypto Critic’s Corner podcast.

Spotify / Google Podcasts / RSS

I had actually planned a different episode next, but I had this conversation with Cas last weekend that I enjoyed so much I veered from my course and devoted an episode to him. He’s had a strange and surprising path from baker to crypto skeptic.  We talked a decent amount about his hero, the accountant Cynthia Cooper.

What else? I reference another podcast in this interview, one I heard on the radio (apparently they play podcasts on the radio). I looked it up afterwards to find out what it was, it turns out it’s this episode of Snap Judgment. I sat in my parking space longer than necessary when I heard it in the car.

Some people also wrote to say they liked getting a newsletter even when there isn’t an audio story in it. So I’ll probably continue to send you stuff online that I find that I like. This week, the thing I most liked on the internet was this (very on theme for whistleblowers):

Ten years ago today, a Theranos employee went to Reddit for help. He didn't name the company, but it was all basically right there in the post. I wonder what secrets are being shared by anonymous accounts today that we will only understand in 2032. reddit.com/r/jobs/comment…

Lastly, I’m going to be in Miami this week at the Bitcoin conference. The plan is to see a bunch of talks and generally chat with a bunch of people. If you’re there, and there’s something I ought to see or someone I ought to talk to, drop me a line. I might not get to everything, but I’m going to try.

I was just thinking about how much I miss you in the podcast world and then I found this. Holy shit. After binge listening to so much of your work during the panini I was close to tearing up hearing your voice again. I’m so, so happy you’re back. The series is perfect too.

I don’t have anything insightful to post, but I did want to echo what everyone else is saying: it’s so much fun having PJ back in my life. This sounds weird, but I feel like I was missing a friend.
